Winter 2008-2009 — Gifts

Welcome to the Winter 2008-2009 edition of LightWork!

Since this issue comes out during the holiday season, what better time to discuss gifts? And we don't necessarily mean the kind you buy at a store...

The Awakening
by Devrah Laval
Who are you? Knowing the answer to that question may be the greatest gift of all.

The Gifts We Give Ourselves
by Asha Hawkesworth
It's great to give to others, but sometimes it's even more important to give to ourselves.

Leap! into Forgiveness
by Isaac Allen & Chad Cameron
Forgiveness is not a gift we give others; it's a gift we give ourselves.

Christmas Presence
by Ahnna Hawkesworth
When I learned how to give to myself, I got the life I always wanted.

Seasonal Recipe

Asha's Fruitcake

In the U.S., fruitcake has become synonymous with barely edible doorstops filled with fake-colored candied fruit. It wasn't always thus. This recipe began life as a banana cake, and it has morphed into a more natural fruitcake, which has become a holiday tradition in the Hawkesworth household. Yummy.

Power Thoughts

Old thought: What I need can wait.
New thought: I matter. My needs are a priority for me.

Old thought: I just can't forgive that person.
New thought: I can't forget what happened, but I can have compassion for the person who did this.

Old thought: There isn't enough of me to go around.
New thought: I matter. It's ok for me to say, "No."

Love is, above all, the gift of oneself.
—Jean Anouilh

You can give without loving, but you can never love without giving.

Yesterday is history. Tomorrow is a mystery. And today? Today is a gift. That's why we call it the present.
—Babatunde Olatunji

We all have different gifts and different ways of saying to the world who we are. The world needs a sense of worth, and it will achieve it only by its people feeling they are worthwhile.
—Fred Rogers

Forgiveness of others is the second best gift you can give yourself. Forgiveness of yourself is the best gift you can give yourself and the world. So, forgive others and also, do not stop until you forgive yourself.
—Laura Teresa Marquez

What we are is God's gift to us; What we become is our gift to God.
